Hazel Reed

These two smaller works are part of our Christmas Exhibition.

Hazel was born in Colne, Lancashire in 1942.
She attended Newport College of Art and University of Leeds Institute of Education, and taught Art and Design at both secondary and adult education levels. Retiring in 1995, she moved to Sutherland in 1997.

"When seeking inspiration I don’t look much further than the Highlands. The colours, shapes, textures and patterns in the landscape and seascape change daily, from soft and muted to strong and vibrant. These elements are dominant in my work. I mainly rely on memory to create images,
only occasionally referring to sketchbooks and photographs.

Searching for the fabrics, threads and dyes necessary to achieve the desired effect can be time-consuming. The direction of each individual piece determines which techniques are involved, but could include fabric painting and dyeing, collage, weaving and sometimes a combination of machine and hand embroidery."

Hazel has held several exhibitions jointly with husband Cyril Reed, as well as participating in many group shows.
