John NICHOLSON
John Nicholson grew up in Surrey and was educated in Dorset.
He studied at Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting, London and now lives and works in the North of Scotland.
Between 1965 and 1966 he painted in London and Paris before gaining a teaching qualification. He retired from teaching art in 2003 and now paints full-time.
John's feelings for the Highlands and his fondness for France, where he returns to paint year after year, inspire and inform his work. He prefers to paint "en plein air" and his annual trips to the Tarn region allow him to paint outside for long periods of good weather!
If it should rain, John is more than happy to paint still life, especially fruit and vegetables.
In all his work John aims to achieve a significant balance between subject matter and the abstract elements. His oil paintings are calm with perfect and subtle tones, showing a skilled assurance with the handling of the medium.
