Margaret COWIE

Margaret Cowie will be painting and exhibiting at the gallery in Highlands Open Studios week at the beginning of June 2008

"Having given up Art after second year in Secondary school, in order to concentrate on more "academic" subjects, my interest was rekindled years later when I went to an evening class in the subject and later took my Higher Art at Inverness College.

Painting proved to be a most absorbing obsession over the years as I experimented with different media and also with different aspects of artistic output such as printmaking, silk painting and stained glass making. The bulk of my output however consisted of gouache and watercolour paintings primarily featuring flowers and still life subjects.

Having now retired, I paint regularly and have expanded into oil and acrylic work, concentrating on more landscape, and life drawing and painting.

I particularly enjoy painting out of doors in the Highlands but also, because of my love of bright colours, I have greatly enjoyed the painting experiences I have had over the years in Spain, Italy, Southern France, Greece, and Morocco. Indeed I can claim to have paintings in private collections in all of these countries (except Morocco!)

Provence is probably my favourite part of the world to paint in, which perhaps is not surprising in light of the fact that Cezanne is my favourite artist.

I am a past President of Inverness Art Society and have had several solo and joint exhibitions in the Highlands over the years."
