ALAN BAILLIE, SILVERSMITH

Alan Baillie trained at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating with a degree in silversmithing and design in 1980. He then worked for the Royal Silversmith in Edinburgh for four years before setting up his own business.

He says:
" I am always looking for new interesting textures and form to use in my work. I can be inspired by anything from a dessicated quince to a ribbon of seaweed. Living in the beautiful landscape of the Scottish highlands is a constant stimulus - a walk in the mountains can fill my head with a myriad of new ideas. I try to translate these textures to the raw metal using a variety of techniques including "chasing" (sculpting thesilver with steel punches), rolling and forging. Above all I aim to bring out the inherent beauty and versatility of silver itself. My contemporary designs reflect this."

Alan produces a wide range of hollow-ware, from chased bowls inspired by sedimentary rock formations to original Scottish quaich designs with Luckenbooth heart-shaped handles, often given as wedding gifts.

"Tumble Cups" are round-bottomed gilded whisky drinking cups which make perfect 21st brithday presents, or in a smaller size, a Christening gift.
